Tom Beasley leads the Vancouver Maritime Museum Society
Following the May 2021 AGM of the Vancouver Maritime Museum Society (VMM), Tom Beasley was elected President of the VMM Board. Tom replaced Peter Bernard who had been the VMM President for 8 years. Tom led a change in the diversity of the VMM Board members adding 3 indigenous women under 35, all who are involved in maritime activities (Sarah Thomas of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation and a Director of Clear Seas Centre for Responsible Shipping; Alex Anaviapik of Pond Inlet whose great-grandparents were the Inuk Guides on the St. Roch; and Delani Hulme-Lawrence, a para-Olympic sailor and the Programs and Communications Manager for BC Sailing). Dr. Paul Kariya, a senior policy advisor for Coastal First Nations and a 3rd generation member of a Japanese Canadian fishing family, was also appointed a VMM Director in 2021. That diversity and renewal continued at the 2022 AGM and included adding Robert Lewis-Manning the President of BC Chamber of Shipping, and Dr. Coll Thrush, a maritime historian at UBC. The VMM Board has moved to a policy board and is about to issue a progressive and dynamic Strategic Plan, under the leadership of its new Executive Director, David Jordan.
